BSNL’s Kerala circle registers record profit but Unions play spoilsport

Trivandrum: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Kerala circle has earned record profit of Rs. 486 crores in the financial year 2014-15 and is the best performing circle in the country even though BSNL as a whole is making losses. This was announced by M S S Rao, Chief General Manager of BSNL Kerala circle while addressing a press conference here.

“The Kerala circle is performing extremely very well and has registered growth in all aspects including revenue and profit, consecutively for the last four fiscals. The circle has made a gross revenue of Rs. 2,838 crores with a profit of Rs. 486 crores during 2014-15 as against Rs. 411 crores in 2013-14 even while the central PSU is struggling at the national level. But frequent strikes and agitations, called by various employees’ unions of both regular and contract employees, have hit the growth of the circle as services to customers are being disrupted”, said Rao.

BSNL Kerala circle has over 13,000 regular employees and over 7,000 outsourced employees engaged through over 30 contractors.

The Casual Contract Labourers Union (CCLU) representing the outsourced employees, have been on agitation for some months demanding revision of minimum wages, bonus, etc. These workers are employees of the contractor and not BSNL. So they have no right to protest in our premises. The contract workers’ union should agitated at their contactors office”, added Rao.

The BSNL Employees Union (BSNLEU) and the Sanchar Nigam Employees’ Association (SNEA) had gone on an indefinite strike last month to support the demands of striking contract labourers.

Terming the BSNLEU’s intervention in the contract labour issue as ‘illegal’, Rao said, “Though we are the principal employer, the responsibility of increasing wages according to the market rates for contract employees is with the contractor. The working employees union should not be representing contract labourers.”

He also alleged that a section of union leaders, who have differences with him over several issues, target him personally and even threatened him. These leaders of the unions have been suspended pending inquiry over the allegations.
