Do we need a new building or a bigger Church?

I am a member of the St. George Orthodox Syrian Cathedral in Trivandrum in Kerala. It is the oldest Orthodox Church in the capital city. Recently, our Church Managing Committee decided to purchase some land near the church. The 24.5 cents plot will cost the Church about Rs. 9 crores. Personally I feel it’s ridiculous to spend so much money just for buying a property.

Buying a new property and constructing a new building will not solve our problems of a small church and no parking. I have put down some of my thoughts about this issue and I feel they should reconsider the decision to buy a new property. Continue reading…

Church Choir or Chaos?

Continuing with my post on the state of affairs at our church, the St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Trivandrum, here is my take on the church choir.

1. Either there should be a proper choir or no choir. What we have today is a shame.

2. Most of the time it looks like there is a competition between those in the madbaha (altar).

Can we save our Sunday Schools?

I am a member of the St. George Orthodox Cathedral in Trivandrum (Kerala) and we are part of the Malankara Orthodox Church in India. As on March 2013, we have 1,375 members in our parish register and about 1,000 are active which means about 2,500 – 2,750 individuals but there are only about 100 children for the Sunday School. So what are the issues facing the Sunday School today and what can be possibly done to revive it?

Is the Church equal to all?

Is it ok for a leading left politician to enter the Madbaha (altar area) to meet a Thirumeni (Bishop), that too when he is changing his dress? Is it ok to have scantily dressed bridesmaids and usherers for a high society wedding in an Orthodox church in Kerala?
