‘Ocean on the Plate’ @ Hilton Garden Inn Trivandrum

If you are a fan of seafood, then Hilton Garden Inn Trivandrum is the place to head to this week for ‘Ocean on the Plate’, a seafood promotion at their fine-dine Garden Grille restaurant. It’s a complete seafood menu, starting from salads to grill station to pizza and the main course. The ten-day seafood festival gives the foodies a chance to enjoy a wide variety of tasty dishes from the Malabar Coast including some select seafood salads and curries.

Shinu Paul, the Marketing Executive at HGI welcomed us and Shankar Saranjibi, the Executive Chef gave us an idea behind the promotion. “Being close to the coast, Trivandrum offers the best seafood available in this area and ‘Ocean on the Plate’ is an opportunity for our esteemed guests to experience the palatability of a seafood-themed dinner buffet featuring an array of fresh seafood dishes. We have curetted the menu in such a way that everyone enjoys seafood.”

Guests can get customised marinations as per their taste like southern spice, chilly garlic, Asian lime, paprika chilli and herb crushed flavours or even Tandoor style. They have a cyclic menu and this ensures that the menu changes on a regular basis.

We started off with a selection of seafood-based salads – Som Tum Shrimp salad, Masala Kozhuva (Anchovy) Salad and Calamari (Squid) Salad.

For starters, we had freshly prepared seafood grills from the live grill station. First was Seer (king) fish in Herb Crusted Marinade – a good slice of Seer fish grilled both sides with very refreshing flavours of lime and garlic. This was served with some grilled vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was a bit salty for my taste. Next were some crisp prawns and squid rings in the Southern Spice marinade. Sardine in Paprika Chilli wasn’t my choice. Mahi Mahi in Asian Lime marinade was our favourite pick. The fish just melted in the mouth, the pieces were perfectly marinated and had flavours of fresh Ginger, Lime, Ajwain and went really well with the pudina chutney. It was simply superb with a glass of red wine.

The Pizza section had quite a few options to select from – Pizza Marinara, Shrimp pizza, Fish Tikka Pizza and Chilli fish Pizza. Shinu got us a pizza with assorted seafood and it was one of the best Pizza we have had in recent past – thin crispy crust, crunchy calamari rings, juicy shrimps, tender fish tikka, loads of cheese and fresh herbs. Hilton Trivandrum is known for its pizzas and they have maintained the reputation. Highly recommended.

For the main course, we had a couple of soft phulkas with Malabar fish curry – Tuna in thick coconut milk based gravy and some fabulous Chilli roasted Crab. The crab dish was too good, even for someone like me who isn’t a big fan of crabs.

Finally, we wound up with few soft and juicy rosagullas along with some Elaneer (tender coconut) payasam and dry fruit kheer, reminded me of rabdi.

The seafood festival concludes on November 18 and the dinner only buffet is priced at Rs.1,399+ Taxes for adults and at Rs.799 + Taxes for kids.
