The name Ceylon brings back a lot of memories – Ceylon Tea, Ceylon Parotta and Radio Ceylon (Binaca Geethmala), to name a few. These came to my mind when I got the invitation for the ‘Ceylon Tales’ Sri Lankan food festival currently going on at the Garden Grill restaurant at Hilton Garden Inn, Trivandrum and surprisingly, I could get a couple of them there. Long story short, the dinner only buffet food promotion was a culinary extravaganza as we tasted a wide range of delicacies from our neighbouring island nation at the media tasting session.
About two weeks back, a mail from a local Public Relations (PR) Agency read – ‘Please find attached press release and photograph of a launch…’ but as the attached picture was missing, I mailed them back asking for the picture. “Sorry, there’s no photo, it was a mistake”, was the reply. Yesterday, they (the same agency) sent a release of a press meet. ‘Do you have a picture of the press meet that we can use? “Sorry Sir, we don’t have.”
The term ‘Tandoor’ refers to a variety of ovens but the most commonly known used is a cylindrical oven made of clay meant for cooking and baking. According to Dehkhoda Persian Dictionary, the word Tandoor originates from Akkadian ‘Tinûru’ where the ‘tin’ means mud and ‘nuro/nura’ means fire. So it was very apt when the Hilton Garden Inn, Trivandrum decided to name their tandoori food festival as ‘Flavours from the Clay Pot’, The food promotion at the Garden Grille restaurant as part of their dinner buffet aims to provide the foodies of the capital city a peek into the prominent dishes cooked in the Tandoor, the traditional clay oven.
